Lecture notes on Tacitus, ca. 1856-1876.

Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on Tacitus at the University of Göttingen. In a section of the introduction concerning editions of Tacitus the latest date is 1876; that section has a similar appearance to much of the manuscript, although some material could date from earlier. A beginning date is difficult to estimate. Loose notes at the back are written on the versos of receipts addressed to Leutsch dated 1856 and 1862. The manuscript (perhaps 300 leaves or more) has an introduction (perhaps one fifth of the total) that discusses the development of historiography in Rome up until the time of Tacitus; the life of Tacitus; the history of his works; and the character of his Histories. The majority of the manuscript is then devoted to a detailed commentary on the Histories, Book 1, chapters 1-22, with running references to chapter number. Two inserted leaves at the beginning of the manuscript are written on the verso of printed fliers, signed by Leutsch in 1858, announcing the initiation of a supplement to the journal Philologus.

He entered the University of Göttingen in 1827 and completed his degree there in 1830. He subsequently studied under August Boeckh in Berlin, before returning to Göttingen as a lecturer in 1831, and establi...
